WELL OVER THE YEAR'S AS YOU ALL KNOW, IVE FOUND HUMAN BONE'S AND SKULL'S ON THE 4-SHORE "IT JUST HAPPEN'S DOWN THERE"!!! THERE ARE STILL LOAD'S OF BIT'S OF BODIES ETC JUST WAITING TO POP UP, AS THE MUD OR ROCK CLEAR'S FROM THE 4-SHORE. (YOU'VE ALL WALKED OVER THEM A 1000 TIME'S AND DIDN'T KNOW)

Yeah looks great eh? The shots are from my phone. Not bad for my shity Nokia.
I was on the phone to my missus at the time when I found the skull-not sure who was more freaked -me or her.
I think the first thing I wanted to do was to get some advice. I knew that the tide was on it's way back in and that the skull would be covered soon.
As I didn't have your phone number I phoned Decimal in the hope of getting hold of you but there was no answer from him.
My next instinct then was to call the police. 5 seconds later I was put through to the coastguard and I quickly explained the situation.
2 minutes later I had a call back from the local Police station. At first the operator was a little bit dismissive She said something like 'oh yes we have lots of reports of bones being found on the foreshore' and that it was
probably just some animal bones. I replied something like this ' well I'm looking at a skull with eye sockets, a nasal cavity and jaws with teeth' She quickly realised this was the real deal.
She then needed to know my exact location. With some help from a nice chap who had been watching me from the Thames path I was able to give the Police my exact location and within 20 mins 1 police woman, 2 police men and a forensics guy were climbing down a ladder down to the foreshore.
I should note at this point that to get to where I was using normal access i.e not ladders was about a half hour walk along the foreshore form the nearest slipway.
Me and Decimal went to this spot quite a bit last summer as it was a good for clay pipes and bottles. I remember thinking as I got to the spot yesterday evening that the foreshore had changed quite considerably over the winter.
A lot more mud was evident and based on my experience looked like old mud that had been recently exposed.
Anyway as the police came up to where I was I introduced myself and showed them the pics on my phone. The mood quickly changed from jovial to serious as the importance of the situation sunk in.
By the time the Police had arrived unfortunately the tide had started to come in and had covered the skull. I had already hammered a long metal steak into the mud to mark it's position.
After a quick chat about what we should do it was decided not to leave the skull in situ as it was well exposed and could be destroyed during the next tide. I had suggested that maybe it should be removed professionally as it looked quite old and could be attached to the rest of the body but this was overuled as the danger was that it could have got washed away during the night-fair point I guess.
As neither the Police or the Forensics guy had waders I waded out to my marker and plunged my hand into the water to see if I could find the skull again. Whilst I had my hand on the skull the Forensics guy asked if I could feel it move. After a bit of wriggling I felt it come loose and just pulled it out of the mud. I remember thinking how heavy it felt at the time, like a watermelon. As I put the skull in their Forensics bag I noticed that the jaw was missing to which the Forensics chap dissuaded me from going back to find it as any ID could still be made from the skull and the top layer of teeth. To me I needed no more of a challenge so I waded back out, plunged my arm into the water and felt about till I found what felt like a jaw. I found it will all the teeth still intact.
And that's pretty much it. The Police took all my details and then I had to get going as I didn't want to get cut off as the tide coming back in. I had Stolli the dog with me and would not have got her up one of those ladders.
I got a call from the Police when I got home who wanted to know if members of the public could easily get down to that spot. I informed them that it was along walk from the nearest slipway so I doubted that many people would have wandered that far up the foreshore. I also mentioned that I had done this route countless times and had maybe only seen 1 or 2 people down there in all that time.
They also wanted to know if I was a member of any club. I told them about us at T+F and the fact that I had a PLA permit too to which they seemed satisfied.
I can't stop thinking about who this person was. As I said before to me it looked quite old but Im no expert. Can't wait for it to be ID'd.

BREAKING NEW'S........JUST RANG MY MATE UP IN THE "KNOW" AND "SHE'S".......YES A "GIRL", IS 9 TO 13 YEAR'S OLD AND COULD BE PLAGUE VICTIM...........THE'VE BEEN WORKING ON HER ALL DAY, AND NOW SHE'S GOING OFF TO THE MUSEUM AS I TYPE !!!
THERE'S ALSO ANOTHER POSSIBILITY........BUT I CANT SAY !!!!

JUST FOUND OUT FROM NICK (HE'S BEEN CHASING UP VIA E-MAIL) SHE DIED AT 12.......WAS PROBABLY FEMALE.....AND HAD UN-TREATED TOOTH DECAY.....AND HAD SUFFERED ILL HEALTH IN EARLY CHILDHOOD.........AND WITHOUT CARBON DATING (A LOT OF MONEY AS WE KNOW FROM THE HARPOON) ALL THEY CAN SAY IS SHE DIED OVER 80 YEAR'S AGO.........SHE WILL NOW BE RE-BURIED......WHAT A SAD LIFE INDEED ???
ALWAY'S USE CORRECT PROCEDURE IN THESE CASES.......AS ROCK DID !!!
